FAQ

Why PvP?

Player versus player can offer some unique experiences for players and viewers alike. Certain builds might be more or less effective, than they would be in Singleplayer and completely new strategies might be valid. It's awesome, that Battle Brothers is almost 10 years old and still kept alive by the Developers and Modders alike. And PvP will hopefully offer another fresh angle for this game.

What is Battle Brothers PvP?

Battle Brothers PvP allows players fight Battle Brothers matches against each other.

Every PvP tournament has two halves: a Singleplayer campaign where you build your company under a shared ruleset, and a Multiplayer PvP stage where everyone's company is imported and we play player-versus-player matches live on stream.

How do I join?

Join our Discord Group. Alternatively you can message me on the Discord (username paschi5344) or on Reddit. The one hard requirement: you must stream your Singleplayer campaign live on Twitch, YouTube or a similar platform. You don't have to show your face — but the gameplay has to be on stream, and only the campaign you streamed can be imported into PvP.

What will be the typical PvP tournament setup?

Every tournament will have a Singleplayer Campaign and a Multiplayer PvP element:

  • We will define a maximum number of in-game days for your Singleplayer campaign
  • We will define guidelines about Seed, Difficulty and non-cheese rules (e.g. no third party fights and no Zombie farming)
  • Every player will stream their Singleplayer campaign and at the end give me their save file
  • Maybe for balance or technical reasons, I have to do some minor changes to the team / loadout via a save file editor
  • Then we import everybody's team into PvP and we play Player-versus-Player matches live on stream
Why is PvP not public?

There are still many issues with PvP:

  • It still has many bugs. It would be bad, if new players encountered these. Battle Brothers is a great and stable game, so I don't want PvP to make Battle Brothers look buggy.
  • Every game setup still requires manual input on my end. Therefore I can only support a limited number of PvP matches.
  • In theory you could play PvP without the base game, if you have access to other players' save files. I don't want this. You should only access PvP, if you bought the game.

So we decided on the one simple rule, that solves these problems for the most part:
You have to stream your singleplayer campaign and can only import that campaign into PvP.

Will PvP ever go public?

I would love to publish PvP to the public. But at this point I cannot promise anything. I especially cannot promise any timeline. I want to create a stable version before talking with Overhype about a potential release. And this might take longer than expected.

How can you balance PvP?

I already heard critique about the balance in PvP. For example Ranged weapons might be too strong. But to be honest, I don't want to dive into the balance question too deep right now.

PvP is completely new. We don't know what tactics players will come up with. Also keep in mind, that everybody has to play a Singleplayer campaign to build up their company, so each build has to work in Singleplayer and Multiplayer. So something like a "Crossbow Bullseye" build might underperform in Singleplayer but overperform in Multiplayer. And these tradeoffs might make PvP even more interesting.

So long story short: I am not planning on imposing strict balancing rules in the near future such as restricting Ranged weapons. But of course this could change.

You have feedback for PvP and its rules?

A lot of people already gave me feedback about potential rule sets for PvP, incorporating other mods, etc. This is great and I really appreciate it.

Just keep in mind, that we are still in the earliest stage of ironing out bugs and issues and getting a stable version to run. So I might put a lot of feedback into the backlog. But once we organized a couple of tournaments and get PvP up and running, I will try to address every idea from the community.

Is this affiliated with Overhype Studios?

No — this is not affiliated with or endorsed by Overhype Studios. But Overhype Studios gave me the Ok to host these PvP tournaments. I want to thank Overhype, and especially Paul, for being so responsive and helpful about it.

Is this commercial?

No. This is not commercial, and if the PvP mod ever goes public it will be free of charge — not gated behind any paywall or tipping jar.

Who are you?

I'm HeyPashi. I streamed the first successful "No Town No Loss" run and built community tools like the Location Scouting Mod and a Damage Calculator. I also stream Battle Brothers content on Twitch and YouTube. Big thanks to the streamers who've helped me a lot with bugfixing and more — Ottosama, AshGamingTales, Stonesouls and GoodBoyGeorge.
